Driven by a desire to create materials from food waste, I looked to my own kitchen waste as inspiration. I have utilised banana peels to make bioplastic and avocado skins to make dye.

The materials used were dictated by my personal food waste, but the processes can be applied to other food waste materials such as orange peels for bioplastics and onion skins for dyes.

The methods for creating these materials are very simple and require only a few household ingredients and utensils. They can easily be taught in workshops and employed by people in their own kitchens. Furthermore, WTLGI could utilise its community garden to grow resources for extracting a colourful array of natural dyes such as madder or woad plants, and the dyes can be turned into colourful inks for stationery purposes.
